This book will help you understand how the difficulty of certain pieces compares to other pieces. Sand and Frdric Chopin spent long summers there for seven years, from 1839 to 1846, skipping only 1840, when she was upset by the failure of her play, Cosima, and he was ill. In this book, Magrath categorizes all intermediate, classical piano repertoire into 10 levels. Learning music that is too easy can be boring and learning music that is too difficult can be frustrating and can lead to poor technique and bad habits. One challenge that many piano learners face is finding music at an appropriate level. However, once you explore some of his music, it becomes clear that many of his most famous pieces are quite difficult and require fairly advanced technical skills on the piano. For my part, it takes maybe 2-3 days to learn the piece, but maybe a week or two to get the touch I want for interpretation. A lot of pianists aspire to play the beautiful, poetic music of Chopin. I have seen this piece butchered by intermediate pianists who did not even realize how much they had distorted it. Still, it's not as intense as some octave passages (cough cough liszt hungarian rhapsody 6), and the piece really just requires a lot of practice to nail the jumps in the opening and closing sections. I actually think the Heroic Polonaise is quite doable, the only really dangerous section is the octave passage in the middle, which as stated above requires a really supple wrist to pull off. Huh, I would think the Winter Wind would be much more taxing and dangerous to play (but what do I know, I haven't played either yet). It is clearly fingered with a nice foreword and is easily transportable and high-quality. I would highly recommend this edition to anyone. But if you have a decently supple, strong wrist and fingers that can reach a bit over an octave, it shouldn't be much of a problem." This book includes the First Ballade by Chopin, several of his Etudes from op.10 and op.25, the Scherzo no.2, the Marche Funebre, a selection of Mazurkas and Waltzes, and some other collected works. The most difficult part of this piece, I would say, would be the middle, where the famous octave passage is. I would consider Liszt's "La Campanella" etude harder, but Chopin's "Winter Wind" etude easier. "To me, it's slightly harder compared to other songs in the same genre, but it's not the MOST difficult.
